Abstract

This testimony is the result of an interview that political scientist and journalist Andrea Vento conducted with his father Sergio Vento, the former Italian ambassador to Yugoslavia.

Summary: This written testimony deals with the breakup of Yugoslavia from the Italian perspective. Andrea Vento, an Italian journalist and essayist, interviews his father, Sergio Vento, the last Italian ambassador to the SFRY. The conversation offers an overview of Italian foreign policy towards Yugoslavia in the late 1980s and early 1990s, including the most significant events that led to the dissolution of the Yugoslav federation. Ambassador Vento emphasizes the Italian strategy for bringing Yugoslavia closer to the European Economic Community, but also the interests of certain political actors in the changed European and international context, to recognize the secessions of the Yugoslav republics.
