About the Journal

The journal Tokovi istorije originated from a regular periodical publication of the Institute
for the History of the Workers’ Movement of Serbia, issued in the form of a collected volume
titled Tokovi revolucije (Currents of the Revolution). This series began publication in 1967 and
appeared under that title until 1989 as an annual. During that period, volumes I–XXI and issues
1/1988 and 1/1989 were published. The editors of Tokovi revolucije were Academician Bogumil
Hrabak (1967–1975), Dr. Milan Borković (1977 and 1978), and Dr. Jovan Dubovac
(1981–1989). From 1990 to 1993, the journal of the Institute for Contemporary History of Serbia
was published under the title Tokovi. Under the editorship of Dr. Momčilo Mitrović, issues
1/1990, 1/1991, and 1–2/1992 were released.

The journal assumed its current form in 1993, when it was renamed Tokovi istorije
(Currents of History), acquired a new content structure, and introduced a redesigned graphic
layout. The publication schedule initially comprised four issues per year and, since 2010, three
issues annually. The editors-in-chief of the journal have been: Dr. Latinka Perović (1993–2000),
Dr. Mile Bjelajac (2000–2005 and 2009–2012), Dr. Radmila Radić (2005–2009), Dr. Gordana
Krivokapić Jović (2012–2016), Dr. Slobodan Selinić (2016–2020), and Dr. Vladan Jovanović
(2020–2024). Articles, contributions, archival sources, and reviews have addressed new topics
and reflected emerging historiographical trends. Alongside studies on the economic and political
organizations of the workers’ movement, the history of Serbian society between the two world
wars and during the Second World War, and the history of government and the Communist Party
in socialist Yugoslavia, the journal has also published works on social ideas, modernization
trends, political parties, the history of institutions, the church and religious relations, economic
development, social strata, foreign policy and international relations during the Cold War,
prominent individuals and statesmen, national minorities, the family and the status of women, the
past of Serbs outside Serbia, private life, the causes and circumstances of the dissolution of
socialist Yugoslavia, as well as assessments of foreign historiography and its interpretations of
Yugoslav history, among other topics.

Today, Tokovi istorije is published in three issues per year, in Serbian and English. All
submissions undergo double-blind peer review by two anonymous reviewers. The journal’s
editorial policy is to publish only original scholarly articles that meet high academic standards
and are devoted to the study of the past from the beginning of the twentieth century to the
present, while remaining open to interdisciplinary approaches.
